Director of Billing Operations
We are partnering with a Private Equity backed service company providing B2B services across the life science and healthcare industry. The company is adding this new position to support continued growth as this group has completed over 10 acquisitions in the last 2 years, continuing down the buy and build strategy.

The Director of Billing Operations will be responsible for revenue assurance and revenue management; and internal controls over the accuracy and completeness of customer invoicing over the company’s various revenue streams. This position will lead a revenue team to execute operational transactions and continuous improvement.

Office Requirement: Company is HQ in the greater San Diego area. Company will explore local candidates, those willing to relocate or can work remote with occasional travel.

Essential Functions

• Develops and implements processes and controls meant to ensure that revenue capture is accurate and maximized across multiple billing systems including customer portal billing process.
• Maintain and update customer invoicing processes and implement continuous improvement over the timely execution of customer invoicing.
• Manage and mentor a team of revenue professionals that identify ways to prevent revenue leakage or loss, reduce costs associated with business operations and revenue capture.
• Address revenue transaction inquiries from the business and provide guidance towards resolution of billing discrepancies.
• Identify, implement, and execute on internal controls and process improvements associated with customer invoicing.
• Review contract review summaries for complex transactions (for internal and audit purposes)
• Establish and enforce policies, guidelines, and procedures to ensure compliance, accuracy, and operational efficiency.
• Support billing and collections staff in resolving challenges.
• Collaborate with cross-departmental leadership to assess resource needs and improve billing productivity and collection rates.
• Monitor and analyze key metrics, such as outstanding authorizations, billings, collections, and accounts receivables, to reduce bad debt and ensure performance goals are met.
• Provide regular updates and reports on revenue challenges and trends to the executive leadership team.
• Cultivate a culture of continuous learning and productivity to support a high-performing team environment.
• Perform additional duties as required.

Education, Experience and Skills

• Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field.
• A minimum of 8 years of experience in revenue cycle management, billing, and collections, preferably in a B2B or service-oriented setting.
• Demonstrated leadership experience in managing billing and collections teams, policy development, and executing strategic initiatives.
• A combination of relevant education, experience, and training may fulfill the requirements.
• In-depth knowledge of billing operations, accounts receivable management, and collections.
• Strong skill set with invoicing in a high volume transaction business
• Demonstrated track record of process improvement within revenue transaction invoicing
• ERP experience is required
• Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments.
• Proven ability to address complex issues and customer complaints while ensuring compliance and optimizing revenue processes.
• Demonstrated success in working collaboratively with diverse teams and fostering cross-departmental cooperation.

The Director of Revenue Operations will provide strategic leadership for all revenue cycle management functions, directing billing, authorization, and collections activities to ensure efficient, accurate, and compliant revenue generation. This role is critical in maximizing reimbursement, optimizing the billing cycle, and establishing policies that support long-term profitability. By managing the Billing Department and consulting with leaders across business units, the Director will streamline billing operations, improve collections, and drive key performance indicators (KPIs) to achieve financial goals

Office Requirement: Company is HQ in La Jolla, CA. Company would prefer local candidates.

Essential Functions

• Direct and oversee RCM functions, providing leadership and strategic guidance to maximize revenue potential.
• Plan, develop, and implement programs, projects, and technologies to continuously enhance the revenue cycle
• Develop and implement policies, guidelines, and procedures to ensure compliance, accuracy, and efficiency.
• Lead all department operations, including data entry, coding, documentation, claim preparation and submission, A/R management, payment posting, denials, collections, customer service, and appeals.
• Oversee billing authorization processes and manage the billing and collections staff in resolving complex payer issues.
• Consult with leadership across departments to advise on resource needs and enhance billing productivity and collection rates.
• Collaborate with IT and other stakeholders to ensure the accuracy of billing-related technology and data management.
• Participate in strategic planning, vendor management, and contract negotiations to support long-term business objectives.
• Analyze and report on metrics, such as outstanding authorizations, billings, collections, and accounts receivables, to minimize bad debt and maintain performance within set limits.
• Provide regular reporting on revenue cycle challenges, successes, and trends to the executive team.
• Foster an environment of continuous learning and productivity to maintain a high-performing team.

Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field.
• 8+ years of experience in revenue cycle management, billing, and collections, ideally within a B2B or service-oriented environment.
• Proven leadership experience in managing billing and collections teams, developing policies, and executing strategic initiatives.
• A combination of education, experience and training may meet requirements.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Expertise in billing operations, coding, documentation, A/R management, and collections.
• Strong analytical skills with experience in budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting.
• Proficiency in ERP systems, billing software, and CRM platforms, with a strong understanding of IT functions related to billing.
• Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments.
• Ability to handle complex issues and customer complaints while ensuring compliance and optimizing revenue processes.
• Proven ability to work effectively across departments and with diverse teams.
