Vice President of Safety and Training

I am working with a PE owned transportation organization in the NE that is seeking a VP of Safety. This company has seen tremendous growth of 20+% year-over-year and continues to expand.

Overview:

As Vice President of Safety and Training, you will be responsible for direction, coordination and administration of all safety and training related matters affecting our employees. Due to the sensitivity and importance of safety, this position has reporting responsibility to the Chief Operating Officer. This position also includes compliance with state and federal rules and regulations (OSHA, DOT, etc.) as they pertain to our employees.

Besides the duties to develop and implement a comprehensive safety and training program, the position requires a dynamic leader with a personality and work demeanor that can create and foster a “safety first and always!” culture within the company. The position requires a personality that can work independently and has a vision to promote and communicate the safety mission.

The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor’s Degree with at least 5 years of experience overseeing a Safety and Risk Management Program.

Primary Responsibilities & Objectives:

  • Create a top-down “safety first and always” culture that permeates throughout the Company. • Work independently to identity safety and training needs for the company and craft a safety and training program that embodies the qualities of safety first. • Ensure full compliance of our safety guide. • Control hazardous working conditions and unsafe employee practices through site visits, worksite inspections, safety hazard and risk assessments, safety plans, and education of all personnel. • Review internal safety policies and practices to ensure they are current and appropriate. • Research new regulations and developments and recommend changes in and training for the company’s program. • Oversee compliance with applicable OSHA, DOT, etc. regulations. • Assist in the documentation and implementation of required or desired changes in the safety program. • Review documentation to ensure required onsite records and reports are complete, accurate, and submitted. • Drive a safety culture by effectively communicating an enhanced vision, accountability and metrics across the organization to ensure meaningful improvement on safety performance, claims and insurance expense. • Change agent that can identify, analyze and create opportunity for continuous improvement across the organization • Energetic and focused personality with a demonstrated ability to take initiative, successfully handle and prioritize multiple competing assignments and effectively manage deadlines. • Identify, develop and monitor training needs of all employees. • Develop and secure safety orientation and training programs for employees.

Passionate about coaching and development • Positive and upbeat in a team environment – a motivator • Develop, manage and control employee training records and files in accordance with the Company’s objectives as well as state and federal mandates. • Maintain records related to accidents and the drug/alcohol testing program and ensure proper compliance and documentation of program. • Support acquisition and integration teams on insurance and risk management matters. • Any other duties, as assigned. • Ability to travel to all locations.

Requirements:

Active or ability to acquire a 7D School Pupil License ? Has attained or is working toward being a CPR/FA/AED instructor (AHA) with certification.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree with experience in public or private sector with background in transportation management is preferred. • Minimum 5 years of experience overseeing a Safety and Risk Management Program.

Work Environment: This is primarily an office and classroom-based position; however, this position will require time spent in vans out on the road. It is a professional environment involving constant interaction with drivers, monitors, transportation coordinators, management, and other employees. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Physical Demands:

This position requires the ability to sit, stand, walk, climb or balance and stoop, kneel, reach, or crouch. This role requires sitting in front of a computer, as well as standing/walking while training indoors and outdoors. This position must be able to tolerate heat and cold temperatures outside, and be able to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds (for example lift/maneuver car seats, classroom furniture, etc.) You must be able to travel to other bases/locations as required.
