Vice President of Operations (Manufacturing/Assembly/Supply Chain)

The VP of Operations will lead expansion and optimization of our base light-assembly-manufacturing and pick and pack operations which assembles its robots and fulfills thousands of monthly packages (150+ accessory SKUS & subscription products). Our assembly/production facility has increased robot production and pick & pack output drastically over the last 5 years and is working to fast track that growth as it accelerates domestic and international growth, with the need to produce significantly more robots over the next two years, while also increasing pick and pack capabilities at an even greater rate. The VP of Operations will also help to lead and scale our customer experience and logistics infrastructure alongside the COO to support continued company growth.

As a small team (125+ employees) that’s growing fast, the VP of Operations role will be a demanding, yet highly rewarding role, leading operations and team development across two offices as we continue scaling our D2C model globally. The VP of Operations should be a highly analytical, results-driven, hands-on business leader, planner, and implementer, working to align our cross-department operations with consumer demand. Historically, the company’s sales have always exceeded production capabilities and this needs to be more properly aligned so that growth is not limited by its assembly and pick & pack capabilities.

VP of Operations reports to the Chief Operations Officer, and will join our management team.

Responsibilities

From a manufacturing/assembly/pick and pack standpoint, The VP of Operations will be responsible for:

  • Manufacturing/Assembly: Working with our Director of Plant Operations and their 70+ person team, the VP of Operations will be tasked with helping to scale our production and assembly operations to keep up with global consumer demand. We are in the process of transitioning from a single line / single shift operation to a multi-line / multi-shift operation. This will require significant planning and pivoting as we work to continue increasing throughput that aligns with forecasted demand. Further, the VP of Operations will be tasked with driving best in class assembly capabilities which will focus on gaining efficiencies through optimizing product production at the plant through optimized process flow, automation, overhead absorption, continuous improvement while instilling best practices company-wide.

  • Pick and Pack Operation: Working with our Purchasing & Supply Chain Manager, we need to drastically increase our pick & pack throughput to ship the same day and next day to our growing customer base and subscribers. The VP of Operations will be tasked with better aligning our pick & pack operations with smarter systems infrastructure and business automation, with the support of our Director of Systems Automation and Director of IT.

  • Quality: Working with our incoming Quality Engineer Manager and Supply Chain Manager, the VP of Operations will oversee all quality operations across the company. Quality oversight includes and is not limited to global supply chain, vendor management, robot assembly, customer experience, pick and pack accuracy, and more.

  • Logistics: As we move to a multi-facility operation through the support of local cold storage and 3PL vendors, as well as our upcoming new facility development, the VP of Operations will help oversee logistics, both inbound and outbound from suppliers and vendor partners. As we grow our international customer and supplier base, the VP of Operations will oversee the needs of our global logistics as well.

  • Facilities Development: The VP of Operations will oversee the upcoming development of a 50,000-100,000 sq ft facility expansion, our headquarters expansion in Auburn Hills, and WI operations office redesign. The VP of Operations will plan for and lead future expansions as assembly/production needs justify it, as well as the evaluation of international 3PL and factory business needs.

  • Global Supply Chain: Working with our Purchasing & Supply Chain Manager, the VP of Operations will help oversee our global supply chain suppliers and vendor partners, as well as the evaluation of new vendor partners as needed for future and current programs.

  • Returns & Warranty Programs: Working alongside our Director of Customer
    Service/Experience, the VP of Operations will oversee the returns & warranty programs for domestic and international customers.

From a business operations standpoint, VP of Operations will be responsible for:

  • P&L Management: You will oversee primary business and manufacturing P&L’s with respective stakeholders.

  • Forecasting: Working alongside the marketing and business development team, you will own domestic & international assembly forecasting to align with world-wide sales projections.

  • Cross-Department Integrations: The VP of Operations will lead cross-department communications to ensure that we are supporting the growing needs of each department and manager. Operates in a visionary business fashion and works in harmony with all other functional business leaders, groups, and teams.

  • Team Development: The VP of Operations will continue building our operations team across our Michigan and Wisconsin offices.

  • Technology: Working alongside our Director of IT and Director of Systems Automation, the VP of Operations will ensure that we have the right technology solutions that align with our growing business needs, company-wide.

  • Standardization: Develops and activates standardized systems, operating procedures, and process improvement actions for all functional segments.

  • KPI’s: Incorporates robust KPIs and business metrics to drive operational and financial improvement. Develop KPIs and manage major projects to drive improvement in process metrics to achieve company cost reduction goals.

  • Optimization: Partner with the COO and Director of Plant Operations, as well as other key business leaders to determine efficiency goals and opportunities for equipment improvement, waste elimination, manufacturing efficiency and cost reduction across the Company. Find opportunities to improve efficiency and develop a continuous improvement mindset/culture across the organization by leading plant level studies in cost management techniques for productivity enhancement and operational process improvement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Manufacturing, Management, Engineering or an equivalent field of study.MBA or higher education in Manufacturing, Engineering or Supply Chain Management preferred

  • 10+ years prior experience successfully managing a variety of departments, notably manufacturing/assembly, engineering, procurement, project management, quality, safety, logistics

  • Ability to travel domestically as needed between our MI and WI facilities.

  • Meaningful experience in meeting the demands of the direct-to-consumer customer

  • Strong broad Lean Manufacturing toolbox with theoretical understanding and practical application (VSM, 5S, SMED, SW, Kanban/Material Pull Systems, Variation Reduction (VR), Poka yoke, Heijunka, Problem Solving, Lean Daily Management, 3P, etc.). Completion of lean manufacturing training and certification programs is a plus.

  • Substantial experience in manufacturing processes, manufacturing systems, industrial engineering, quality systems, inventory control, and logistics within a company

  • Prior experience in capital expenditure management, capital approval processes, and installations

  • Ability to think strategically with strong analytical and problem solving skills

  • Strong business acumen with both strategic skills and the ability to execute effectively. The ideal candidate will have a well-rounded background, but with a distinct manufacturing orientation.

  • A strong communicator capable of presenting ideas, selling new concepts and tactics, listening to contrary opinions, and driving a strategy into an organization.

  • Must be able to work closely with Sales, Marketing, R&D and SBUs to support the overall growth objectives of the Corporation.
